MI5, officially known as the Security Service, is the United Kingdom's domestic counter-intelligence and security agency. It operates alongside other intelligence agencies like MI6 and GCHQ, and is responsible for protecting British parliamentary democracy and economic interests, as well as countering terrorism and espionage within the UK. The agency is governed by the Security Service Act 1989 and is colloquially referred to as 'Box' or 'Box 500'.
